Purpose

This training course covers SQL fundamentals and their application within the PTC Windchill system. Most of the SQL statements within this course are applicable to both Oracle SQL and Microsoft T-SQL.

We will be focusing on using T-SQL on Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL). However, where applicable, Oracle equivalent statements have been provided. 

This course is targeted at SQL beginners and intermediates but is also applicable for database analysts looking to interrogate and report data from the PTC Windchill System.


Objectives

  • The primary objective is to enable participants to effectively query and analyse Windchill data while understanding best practices and performance considerations.
  • The secondary objective is to demonstrate what is capable within SQL to help improve in-house company projects, dashboards, systems, and overall business reporting capability.

  • It is expected that this course acts as a guide, it is necessary to practice examples outside of the course to be comfortable with the SQL language, and the Windchill Schema.

Important! Any queries performed during this course or for practice must be run against a non-Production server.


By the end of this course, you will…

  • Understand core SQL syntax and concepts for retrieving and analysing data.
  • Write and execute SQL queries on Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases.
  • Be familiar with tools used for database access and best practices for safe querying.
  • Understand PTC Windchill’s database architecture.
  • Recognise SQL nuances within Windchill’s architecture and how to work with them.
  • NOT make any persisted changes to a database, i.e. INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE
